Given an astronomical rise in the divorce rate during the late 1960s, the concept of "marriage counseling" rapidly entered the vernacular. While most marriage counselors basically practiced talk therapy, "sex therapists" on the other hand proposed to cure their patient's inadequacies through hands-on sexual contact. Always looked upon a bit skeptically by mainstream America culture (weren't these 'therapists' really just prostitutes?), sex therapy acquired a reputation as something of a questionable fad.
In Dirty Doctor Deviate (also released as Two Goes into Two, Once) we are treated to an expose on the seamier side of the sex therapy racket. A young woman consults a middle-aged marriage counselor in his office. We learn in voice-over that the man is, in reality, a predatory hack out to make a quick buck and seduce the countless vulnerable women who wander into his lair.
Capitalizing on the fact that his patient fears she is frigid, the therapist offers his self-serving diagnosis: "If we can get you sexually aroused here in my office, which would disprove your frigidity theory." He deftly maneuvers the woman over to his sofa, where he proceeds to fondle her, slowly undresses her, and orally stimulates her to orgasm. His experiment completed, he then offers to visit the woman at her home on a subsequent evening so that he can share his clinical prowess with her husband as well.
The woman leaves and the charlatan's sensual sidekick, Nurse Joyce, enters the scene. They discuss the doctor's plans to fuck and fleece the young couple and get so excited that they begin to grope each other lasciviously. After a bit of wrangling on his chair, Nurse Joyce finally succumbs to the doctor's oral ministrations on the desk. A few nights later, the duo appears at the couple's home to observe their lovemaking. The therapist quickly intervenes, showing the husband how to properly suck his wife's tits and finger her pussy. After he gets the hang of it, the husband takes his marital duties into his own hands while Nurse Joyce and the good doctor get it on in the corner of the bedroom.
In a second episode, another woman visits the therapist's office. She fears that she is actually a lesbian and that it is ruining her marriage. The therapist acts quickly: he calls in Nurse Joyce and orders her to seduce the woman; then, in an act of therapeutic mercy, he lays his own healing organs upon the woman's afflicted areas in the hopes of determining whether she is AC as well as DC. Joyce administers her part of the therapy with the usual gusto. No doubt nullifying the experiment's results, however, the duo begin to operate on the woman at the same time, Joyce riding her jawbone while the quack defibrillates her muff. The patient soon shows signs of a complete recovery.
The final bit of business involves a group therapy session in which the therapist assembles two couples in a room with cushions on the floor. The couples start to copulate, the cameraman climbs a ladder to shoot the sequence from overhead, and the resulting orgy lets us know that it'll soon be time to make our way to the exits.
Dirty Doctor Deviate is a very apt example of a "split beaver" film, the genre immediately preceding hardcore features. While the film contains no insertion or cum shots, it's sizzling hot nonetheless, devoting its energy to the sensual tease and placing as much emphasis upon the female orgasm as the average XXX features does on the male squirt shot.
